Resurrection Eyes

In this Easter 2026 sermon, “Resurrection Eyes,” based on Luke 24:13–35, the message centered on the life-changing importance of Jesus’ resurrection. Through the story of the two disciples on the road to Emmaus, the sermon showed how their hope had been shattered because they misunderstood what kind of Redeemer Jesus came to be. They expected political and national deliverance, but Jesus came to bring redemption for all people through His death and resurrection. Before opening their physical eyes, Jesus first opened the eyes of their hearts through Scripture, helping them see that God’s plan had been there all along. The sermon challenged listeners to examine whether they have placed God inside their own expectations and invited them to respond in faith, letting the truth of the risen Christ move them to both surrender and action.

Eye Opening Journey

  • Shattered Hope…vs: 14-18

Huge Event

  • Caused them to leave home and follow Jesus

  • Shocked that this stranger doesn’t know about events…vs: 18-19

  • Talk of Jerusalem

These two men were invested

  • Time / Travel / Spiritually

  • Vs:21….We had hoped

Sorrow

  • Vs:17…They stood still, looking sad

  • “Still”….collecting himself

  • Emotionally, Mentally,

Believed in Jesus to Free their Nation

  • Prophet

  • Powerful

  • Wisdom

  • Man of God

  • Respect before all People

Acted on that Belief

  • Following him

  • Leaving home

  • Can you imagine?

  • Have you experienced that type of belief and conviction?

Hope and Dreams shattered because they misunderstood the redemption Jesus Brought

Mis-Understood Redemption

Vs: 21…Redeem Israel

  • Wrong perception

  • Jesus came not to redeem a Nation but All People

  • Paul tells us “Jew and Gentile”

Why then did they doubt the women at the tomb?

  • Didn’t follow their preconceived plan and notions

  • Didn’t fit narrative of the God and Redeemer they had created in their minds

We put God in our Box as well

  • We mold his image like clay and please ourselves

  • Redeemer of physical circumstances

  • Love and not Judgmental

  • God of our political party

  • All those should be prayed for through Gods lens and support

Then we are shattered when that idol we created crumbles under scrutiny

Two Eyes Opened

Eyes of the Heart

  • Vs: 16…Eyes kept from recognizing him

Why?

  • He had to repair and correct the view of himself in their heart first

  • If they had Physically seen him

  • Immediately: Redeemer of “Israel”

  • He had explained his purpose, and his resurrection to them several times

  • Jesus Explained himself: Luke 18: 31-34

Priority is to open the heart – eyes

  • 2 Corinthians 5: 7…we walk by faith not by sight

  • Opens the eyes in their heart

  • Vs: 25-27

  • Ignorant

  • Told but didn’t grasp

  • Jesus uses Scripture: Old Testament Prophets

Please open your heart

  • Dead Sea Scrolls

  • Discovered 80 years ago

  • Dated 100 BC – AD 135

  • Bible hasn’t changed in 2000 yrs

  • Voddie Bauchan Quote: “ I choose to believe the Bible because it’s a reliable collection of historical documents written by eyewitnesses during the lifetime of other eyewitnesses that report on supernatural events that took place in fulfillment of specific prophecies that claim that their writings are divine rather than human in origin”

  • Moses: Deuteronomy 18: 15-19

  • Confirmed to be Jesus by Peter in Acts 3:22 and Stephen in Acts 7:37

  • Isiah 53:3-12

  • Written 700 years before Jesus

  • Psalm 22: 16-18

  • Written 1000 years before 1rst crucifixion

  • Hearts Burned: Prescence of God

  • Holy Spirit Prescence….Faith before Sight….Heart hears

Physical Eyes are Opened

Why?

  • Witnesses to his Resurrection

  • Mormons: 1 witness Joseph

  • Muslim: 1 witness Muhammed

  • Catholicism: 1 Pope as their connection

  • Christians: Hundreds ….still not enough for world

  • That’s the one the Devil fights against
